Turtle Mound – Canaveral Seashore
Have you seen a 50-foot high pile of shells shaped like a turtle? This prehistoric archaeological site located on Highway A1A nine miles south of New Smyrna Beach and is the largest shell midden on the mainland United States. The mound extends 600 feet along the Indian River shoreline and contains over 35,000 cubic yards of shells. It used to be 75-feet high but was mined for shells to build roads.
The turtle-shaped mound contains oyster shells and refuse from the prehistoric Timucuan people. Radio-carbon dates it around 1000 BC. Today, the site is owned and managed by the National Park Service as part of Canaveral National Seashore. You can walk on a boardwalk on the Mound to see beautiful views of the Lagoon and surrounding area.
