SCPA Healthcare Decisions 2020

Health Decisions 2020 Featured

Written by  Team SCPA

It's time to discuss the most important issue facing the democratic primary and the upcoming election: Healthcare. In the United States, we have leading high tech medicine and advanced pharmaceuticals, yet we have the most inefficient and expensive healthcare system in the world. Of our population, 8.5% or around 276,000 people, have no insurance resulting in 26,000 deaths annually; and approximately 500,000 families go bankrupt every year from health issues, with or without insurance. Before the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (often referred to as "the ACA"), these figures were much worse. The ACA hangs just one senator and one supreme court justice away from revocation by Republican lawmakers who offer no alternative. Is ‘Medicare for all’ a feasible solution?

Join us as we talk to health care experts and practitioners to discuss issues and clarify the choices offered by the presidential candidates.

SPEAKERS:

Dr. Steven Blythe - In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Blythe holds a masters degree in public health. He has practiced medicine for 37 years and had a medical practice in Maine with clients from both US and Canadian systems. He was a 2008 congressional candidate in this area running on single payer as a primary issue.

Dr. Dena Grayson -  A graduate of Melbourne High, has both a medical degree (MD) and a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular cell Biology. Her focus has been the development of new medicines to treat serious diseases, including the Ebola virus. Her professional involvement and dedication to healthcare give her a unique perspective on the delivery and politics of our healthcare system. She is married to former Florida US representative Alan Grayson.

Margarida Jorge - a 23-year veteran of electoral, union and issue campaigns, Margarida currently serves as executive Director of Health care for America Now (HcaN), a coalition campaign she helped found to pass and implement the Affordable Care Act. It reconvened after the 2016 elections to defend the ACA, Medicaid and the social safety net from Republican attacks.

Amy Tidd - Amy served as a navigator in the U.S. Navy. She was a founding member of SCPA, Former head of the Brevard DEC, and Florida House of Representatives candidate.
