Weekend Community Events Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 19 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the Brevard community is honoring Dr. King with a variety of events and celebrations. Dr. King was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.  

Signed into law in 1983,  the day took on a deeper meaning in 1994 when Congress named Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national day of service

Florida Institute of Technology got off to an early start by hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. Community Event on Thursday, Jan. 15 - Dr. King's actual birthday.   The highlight of the evening was orator Leonard Ross' performance of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Melbourne:   A Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Program takes place at 6 pm Sunday, January 18 at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 2729 Lipscomb Street in Melbourne. Rev. Glenn B. Dames, Jr., Pastor of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, Titusville, will be guest speaker.

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. March will begin 9:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Public Library, 955 E. University Blvd. The three-mile march and parade will continue to Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus St. A program sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition will begin at the auditorium at 11:30 a.m. Marchers are asked to gather at 8:30 a.m. at the library. 321-693-2062

Cocoa:  The Central Brevard Ministerial Coalition will host the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March and Program at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 with guest speaker Kendall Moore, attorney. The march will depart from Provost Park and will conclude at the Cocoa Riverfront Park and Amphitheater. Call 321-632-8048 for more information.

Titusville:  Titusville's Annual Martin Luther King Parade begins at 11 a.m. on Monday.  The Parade route will begin at 909 Lane Ave. then turn left onto South Street, and follow South St. heading north. The parade concludes at South Street and Dummitt Ave. A Heritage Festival convenes immediately following the Parade at the Isaac Campbell Park.  More information can be found here.
