May Is National Water Safety Month

May is National Water Safety Month and if you visit  NationalWaterSafetyMonth.org, you'll find an astonishing array of water safety tips, rules, videos and posters.

Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children under 14 years of age. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children four years of age or older begin swim lessons. Brevard County offers numerous opportunities to learn how to swim and stay safe around water. With the weather heating up, families are cooling down at local pools and beaches. Make sure everyone knows how to stay safe.

Brevard County Parks and Recreation's North Area Parks Operations is offering swim lessons, private swimming lessons and open swim at Titusville High Pool, 150 S. Terrier Trail, Titusville. The Palm Bay Aquatic Center is offering Red Cross Water Safety InstructorCourses. Interested candidates must be at least 16 years of age. The Red Cross courses are sponsored by Brevard County Parks and Recreation. For information including dates, times and cost, call the Palm Bay Aquatic Center at 321-952-2232. The City of MelbourneLeisure Services Department is also offering swim lessons for adults and children of all ages. Registration will be held at the Eau Gallie Civic Center on May 18 and June 29.

The Eau Gallie Rotary Club will be bringing "Josh the Otter" Water Safety and Literacy Project to three Brevard County schools in May. Watch for more information and additional water safety tips on the Josh the Otter website.

Let's celebrate National Water Safety Month by maximizing our water safety efforts during the month of May and throughout the year!
