Show Opening May 16 Highlights What Makes the South Unique
The Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts is pleased to host the exhibition Southern Accents presented by the southeast region of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) from May 16 through Aug. 22.
The opening of the exhibit is held in conjunction with SAQA’s inaugural regional conference, “Studio to Gallery,” which will convene on the Florida Tech campus May 15-16.
The artworks in Southern Accents encompass a range of fiber art techniques and styles, from realistic to abstract. Participating artists were asked, ‘What makes life in the South special?’ and then encouraged to celebrate those qualities in an art quilt.
The exhibition was juried by Sandra Sider of the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, Texas. Sider selected 43 entries out of 119 submissions that reflected aspects of the South via fashion, food, family, crafts, décor, music, literature, architecture, nature, humor, history and politics. She also invited SAQA artists from 11 southeastern states to loan additional quilts to the exhibition.
Sider will give a free gallery talk at 1 p.m. on the exhibition’s opening day, May 16. Reservations are not necessary.
Beginning that day, regular hours for the Funk Center will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sunday.
