Space Coast Swing Ensemble Free Concert August 14th

The Space Coast Swing Ensemble presents a program of Sizzlin' Summer Swing on Sunday, August 14 at Merritt Island High School Auditorium, 100 Mustang Way (off North Courtenay Parkway, 32953). The 3:00 PM performance will include smooth swing, hot jazz and cool classics from the Big Band era made famous by the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ira and George Gershwin, Johnny Mercer and Cole Porter. The 17-member jazz band, under the direction of Marion Scott, will perform favorites like Leap Frog, Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, and Sing, Sing, Sing. Renowned east coast jazz singer and "First Lady of Song" Linda Cole will provide vocals. Cole is related to the legendary Nat King Cole. Also appearing is vocalist Ron Starks, a frequent performer with the Sanford Jazz Ensemble. The two will perform Big Band standards such as Time After Time along with pop hits like Under the Boardwalk, My Girl, Masquerade and more. Sizzlin' Summer Swing is free with no ticket required and no reserve seating. For more information, contact Community Band of Brevard at (321) 338-6210, visit www.CommunityBandOfBrevard.com or like their Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/CommunityBandBrevard.

The popularity of swing and the Big Band sound never wanes, according to Space Coast Swing Ensemble leader, Marion Scott.

“This music is as cool, fresh and energetic as it was back in the day,” said Scott. “For this concert, we're happy to have both Linda Cole and Ron Starks laying down vocals. They are top rank professional jazz singers who can really make a song come alive.”

In 1999, the John Philip Sousa Foundation awarded the prestigious Sudler Silver Scroll Award to the Community Band of Brevard for “demonstrating particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years.”
