THE LAGOON IS NOT A RIVER
Did you know that the Indian River Lagoon is not a river at all? The Lagoon is a unique waterway that comprises the Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River and the Indian River. These bodies of water are not actually rivers - because they have no headwaters and no mouths and their flow relies on wind and tidal currents. Instead, the Indian River Lagoon is an estuary, where fresh water combines with ocean salt water through inlets creating a complex mix of habitat and biological diversity. Because the lagoon does not have a regular “flow” like a river, it cannot easily rid itself of pollution.
