Jean Sibelius

With the coming of World War I, the Russian Empire was on its last legs. Jean Sibelius would turn his musical attention to matters other than Finnish nationalism. We'll continue our series of his symphonies this week, but we'll also look back at his most celebrated piece of musical defiance.

We'll hear a bit of Chopin's musical disdain for the Russians as well. Then we'll turn to some works by composers who had to deal with Hitler's Reich; one got out quick, the other wasn't so lucky.

And finally we'll hear from some composers who had musical bones to pick with a couple of kings of England.
