1802 was a portentous year in Europe, and it was tempestuous for Beethoven as well. He was stretching the boundaries in his music for solo piano, and at the same time, he was playing it safe with his orchestral music.

Something was up, but Beethoven wasn’t ready to go public yet. He had other things on his mind, and they weren’t all good.
