Weaving with Palm Leaves at Fiber Guild Meeting

Weaving with Palm Leaves at Fiber Guild Meeting

Learn to make fun critters from palm leaves with Sharon Upshaw and Teresa Camarata when the Space Coast Weavers and Fiber Artists meet October 25 at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Pkwy. from 10 am to noon.

Palm leaves have long been woven to make useful baskets, hats, mats, purses and more. It is a traditional craft in many countries and part of their cultural heritage. By folding and weaving different parts of palm leaves you can also create fun critters. We will be learning to make fish and grasshoppers from coconut palm leaves. Only supplies needed are an old scissors. We will bring the palm leaves.

Variety and enthusiasm describe the members of the Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists Guild. All fiber arts are practiced, shared, and admired at their monthy meetings. Members encourage each other to try new ways of making art with fiber through demos and workshops. In addition to the traditional thread-based crafts, individuals have shared ways to weave and create sculptures with natural materials, metal, paper, and plastic. The guild has satellite groups focusing on rug hooking, spinning, tapestry, and using upcycled materials.

The guild meets the fourth Saturday of each month, (except November and December) at the Merritt Island Public Library. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, call Jeanie McCormack at 321-266-1610. or visit https://www.spacecoastweaversandfiberartists.org/
