The Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists will meet at 10 am on Saturday , May 25 at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway. Following a short meeting , members will demonstrate the making of Temari Balls. Temari, which means handball, is a Chinese craft introduced to Japan in the 7th century. At that time, they were toys or used for juggling. Mothers often gave them to children a symbol of good luck. Today they are used as decorative pieces, Christmas ornaments, and jewelry. Traditionally, the balls were made of thread wrapped around a center of rice husks. The attraction of the craft of Temari is the use of simple thread to make a complex design. Today, many things are used to make the core which is wrapped with yarn, then finer thread, and finally decorated with needle and thread techniques to form a design. Members will bring examples of completed Temari balls and explain what materials and patterns they used to complete their ball.
Since 1983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking, and more. The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about the fiber arts. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, call Jeanie McCormack at 321-266-1610.
