American Jazz Pianist Competition at Gleason Nov 13-15

We are pleased to announce the arrival of the great jazz pianist, composer, band leader and educator Kenny Barron to Florida Tech as one of three judges at the American Jazz Pianist Competition Nov. 13 through 15, 2015. Kenny has played with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Dave Holland, Rufus Reid, Randy Brecker, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Yusef Lateef, Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, and many others. He will kick off the Competition on Friday the 13th with a 7:30 p.m. concert at Gleason Performing Arts Center on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology.

On Saturday, Nov. 14 the semi-final judging will start with trio competitions at 10:00 a.m., followed by solo performances at 2:00 p.m., and an announcement of the 5 finalists around 5:00 p.m.. The judges will be Kenny Barron, Christian Tamburr, and Per Danielsson. At 7:30 p.m. that same evening, Christian Tamburr will appear with his quartet and special guest Clint Holmes.

Sunday the Competition will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a workshop conducted by Per Danielsson on “The Jazz Band Pianist Fundamentals”. Solo and trio final competitions will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and at 5:30 Kenny Barron will hold a master class "Working with a Quartet". The Gold Award Winner will be announced and will perform at 7:00 p.m.
