In 2011, Master Gardeners and artists Linda Krupp and Faye Todd were chatting with Sally Scalera, Urban Horticulture Agent at the UF/IFAS Brevard County Extension Office in Cocoa. Both were involved in the early formation of the Brevard Botanical Garden, and both were looking for a way to promote art. The idea of combining them came into focus as they looked around at the bare walls in the lobby. They each thought what a great place to show the work of local artists while creating a partnership between the artists, art lovers and the BBG. They envisioned increasing awareness of UF/IFAS Brevard County Extension, the Garden and to liven up the lobby a bit at the same time. Sally agreed and gave permission to use the lobby to showcase the work of local artists. Linda and Faye, took measurements, analyzed the space, had a few meetings, contacted several local artists and a “Lobby Gallery” was created.
In addition to the lobby display which changes every 2 months throughout the year, AIL holds an annual fundraiser, which extends the display space from the lobby into the 3,000 square foot auditorium. There is plenty of room for art, artists, demonstrations, and the mingling of guests. Originally just showing paintings, the annual evening showcase has expanded to include photography, mixed media and more. Linda and Faye added music, wine and hors d’ oeuvres to the mix to make for a wonderful and relaxing viewing experience.
