July 6th SCPA to Show Film "13th"
July 1st Thursday -- Movie Night: "13th" Featured
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Our July 1st Thursday
program will be the movie named: "13th", and explores how blacks in America have
been driven from a culture of slavery to one of mass incarceration.
An in-depth look at the prison system in the United States, this documentary reveals
the nation's history of racial inequality. The film explores the "intersection of race,
justice and mass incarceration.” Directed by Ava DuVernay, 13th was Oscar-nominated
this year. It is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution,
which freed slaves and prohibited slavery.
We're hoping for a special guest speaker who can put this all into context. Please
come to learn about this important and very painful aspect of our nation's history.
