Sheriff Ivey Challenges Elected Officials to "Walk a Mile In Her Shoes"

There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.”  Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes.

It’s not easy walking in these shoes, but it’s fun and it gets the community talking about something that’s really difficult to talk about: gender relations and men’s sexual violence against women.  Sheriff Wayne Ivey has posted a videochallenging all elected officials and Police Chiefs in Brevard County to join the walk in support of Serene Harbor, Domestic Violence Center.

What a Girl Wants/Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® takes place Thursday April 30th at the Melbourne Auditorium from 5-9 pm.  This event includes shopping, food, a fashion show featuring the Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Brevard County Fire Fighters and also has men walking a mile in red high-heeled shoes.  Cost to attend the event is $10 in advance, $20 at the door and a limited number of VIP tickets for $50.  Participation in the walk is $50 and includes a t-shirt and the use of the red high-heeled shoes.

All proceeds from What a Girl Wants/Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® benefit Serene Harbor, the local domestic violence center.  Serene Harbor has been serving Brevard County since 1992, housing women, children and now their pets at the center.  All services are provided free of charge and include case management, shelter, food, clothing, assistance with housing and jobs, court advocacy, counseling, educational classes and more.
